The central alter has four bronze columns surrounding the alter. The bronze was taken from the Pantheon. One of the pictures makes these columns look gold. The other picture better captures the color.
The Basilica is a very dark place. Well, at least dark for taking pictures. Due to the bad weather, they were going to have to move something inside. As part of the preparation, the turned on very powerful lights. This allowed me to take some pretty good pictures. Glad the weather was lousey.
