Rome

The first think I noticed about Rome was the interspersed ruins all over the city.  You might find a ruin next to a modern building.  You might find a ruins next to a 2,000 old building next to a building from the 1700’s and then a modern building next to that.  A lot of the old building were destroyed for their materials.  If you were building a new structure and you needed marble, then take it from that old outdated building.  Oops, there goes another ancient building.

Of course, Rome was overrun, burned, etc. on several occasions.  When Constantine converted to Christianity, it seemed appropriate to destroy things related to the old Roman religion.  One of the way old buildings were preserved was to convert them to a Church.
